BRITTEN CENTENERY
Britten Centenery Saturday, 8th June 2013, at 7:30pm | | | | | St Paul’s Church, Augustus Road, Wimbledon Park, SW19 6EW | | Britten | Rejoice in the Lamb | | Howells | Requiem | | Faure | Requiem | Rejoice in the Lamb, a colourful setting of words by the unbalanced but deeply religious eighteenth-century poet Christopher Smart, is notable for its idiomatic and virtuoso organ accompaniment. Herbert Howells wrote his Requiem after the death of his young son, later expanding it into his wonderful masterpiece Hymnus Paradisi. Fauré’s Requiem is one of the most popular of all choral works. Like that of Howells, it is essentially contemplative, while full of inner drama. |
